Joanne Ninomiya's May Diary
|||||
7:45 am. We are picked up by Oahu resident and GK member Sam Campos. Sam was good enough to arrange at the last minute an appearance on the Perry & Price Morning Show on KSSK. Perry & Price are Hawaii's most popular morning talk show hosts, and Ban has visited with them in the past. Perry & Price are about our age, and amazingly Michael Perry belts out "Go Go Go Kikaida" with gusto and brings the house down each time. Perry's children used to watch Kikaida back in the 70's. We answer a few questions and mention the release of the Kikaida 01 DVD Box Set. From the stage, I could see smiles on the faces of the audience. Sam dashes us off to catch the Aloha Airlines flight at 10:40 am for Kahului, Maui. There are a total of 8 of us, including Bob Furukawa, JN Productions' General Manager, who will emcee the Kikaida appearances on Maui and at Shirokiya. Bob is the navigator who keeps us on course. The GK gang has a total of about 10 boxes in all shapes and sizes containing costumes and merchandise. I call it "tabi geinin no dosa mawari," or going barnstorming. The flight is on time and smooth, and when we arrive, good friend Clarence Uehara is at the airport with the Robertsvan to greet us. We load up, and head to the Maui Community College where the Maui Matsuri event will be held.
Lunch is served in the school dining room by the students in the culinary school. After lunch, the GK Bunch, now joined by Hilo costume maker, Layne Luna sees the location for the first time, and starts rehearsal. The first show is scheduled for 3:30, so there's lots of time. The Maui Matsuri sponsors, the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui, always sees to it that we are comfortable and taken care of. We are given a large air-conditioned dressing room which is actually a classroom for audio/visual students. 3:30 p.m. Curtain Call. Characters are transported by golf carts to the mound which serves as the stage. There's a huge crowd. There are many booths, including our GK Store, selling craft items, food and snacks. Mayor Tavares of Maui declares "Kikaida Brothers Day" on May 19, 2007. It is an honor. She lived on Oahu before and remembers the popularity of Kikaida. The crowd loves Kikaida, and Bob of JNP is excellent with the kids. After the appearance, Ikedasan and Ban head to the GK Booth for autographs.
